Worcester Receives $20,000 Grant from TD Green Streets to Support Local Urban Forestry
March, 2016 – Worcester, MA – Today, Worcester, was announced as a winner of TD Green Streets, a grant program from TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, and the Arbor Day Foundation supporting innovation in urban forestry. The $20,000 grant will fund projects throughout Worcester by Worcester Tree Initiative including training students at Claremont Academy and The Boys and Girls Club, and members of Alternatives Unlimited. Stewards will be trained in tree care skills including tree identification, condition assessments, planting and pruning techniques. Trainees will also learn about tree biology, ecology, and principles of urban forestry. Participating youth will also help to plant 20 trees in November at athletic fields which are currently being constructed next to the Boys and Girls Club clubhouse.
TD Green Streets is a component of TD Forests, a North American initiative that helps protect critical forest habitats equal to the amount of paper the bank uses each year. Together, these programs underscore the bank’s commitment to forest protection and stewardship, and are a direct investment in the health of our urban tree canopy.
"TD Bank is proud to award TD Green Streets grants to these municipalities for enhancing their green spaces through urban forestry projects," said Joe Doolan, Head of Environmental Affairs for TD Bank. "We're committed to being an environmental leader, and our work with the Arbor Day Foundation helps us do that in communities across our footprint."
DPW Commissioner Paul Moosey said, “The City of Worcester is proud to again be partnering with Worcester Tree Initiative in our joint efforts to Rebuild Worcester’s Urban Forest. Together we will ensure that every neighborhood in Worcester can experience the cooling, air filtration, health benefits, and beauty that trees bring, and that Worcester’s urban forest is well cared for.”
Along with Worcester, the following municipalities were awarded TD Green Streets grants in 2016:
